Oranges and Fractions

Welcome back after the holidays. We are already working hard. Miss Bonner brought in some oranges so we could do some practical maths by cutting oranges into halves and quarters and thirds.

Find the 1/2's, 1/4's and 1/3's.



Then we got to eat them. Yum!

Holiday Activity - Look after our birds this winter.

Make some bird pudding for the birds to eat. There isn't alot of food around for them in the winter time. Go to the links below for the recipes.

Join the Sumdog Team

Sumdog is a website which has a programme of maths games that are free to play at home and at school. They cover 100 numeracy topics, split into 10 levels designed to develop numeracy skills and so are an excellent way to practise, reinforce and apply the Basic Facts. Teachers can monitor progress and design challenges.

Sebastian Visits Us Again

Every month Sebastian Nicholas comes to visit us. We are keeping track of the changes that happen to him as he grows. 

He is now 11 weeks old and we noticed that on this visit he was much more interested in looking at all of us while we talked and asked questions.

Mrs Nicholas said that he has started 

rolling over and we saw him smiling

at Mrs Harsant.

He has got more hair and is 65 cms long now. He certainly has changed alot since he first came to visit when he was only 3 weeks old.                                                      

Space 10 English class wrote some acrostic poems about Sebastian. You can listen to Jacob's and Michelle's below.

Wow! Look at our new T.V.

The Bachelors have 2 new TVs to use in the classroom. There’s one in Sp 10 and another in Sp 9. We hope Miss Bonner will be getting one soon.

Once the TV is hooked up to Mrs LeSueur’s laptop we can do all sorts of things.

We are all excited to be using our new T.V.

So far we have used it to -   

·   send an email

·   look at our syndicate blog

·   write on the wallwisher wall

·   watch a video about the emperor penguin on the NZ Herald website

·   watch a Youtube video about the honeybees dancing

·   play online Sudoku

·   check out the Sumdog website and how to login in to play

What else can we do??? Just wait and see.

Alice the beekeeper visits us.

Alice came today to talk to us about keeping a bee hive.  She said that bees need us to help them survive. They are in danger because of a mite that destroys the hive.

She asked us to think of ways of how we could look after the bees.

Logan said "we could plant more flowers."

Jack said "don't pick or destroy the flowers."

Thomas L said " keep out of the bees way."

Alice said that bees won't sting you if you leave them alone to do their work. We also have to teach our parents about bees. Thanks very much to Alice for sharing her knowledge with us.

P.M.P. in the hall is fun!

On Mondays we go to the hall for P.M.P. This means Perceptual Motor Programme. We listen to instructions, co-operate in teams and have fun rotating around all the activities. We learn to balance, co-ordinate our bodies, throw and catch, crawl, stretch, roll, and move in all sorts of ways on the equipment.

Yum Yum Pikelets!

Mrs Harsant is putting runny honey on our pikelets.

Who likes pikelets? We do! We ate pikelets with honey and whipped cream on the top. Then we had to talk about what the ingredients were in pikelets.Next we will research where all these ingredients come from and what changes they have to go through.

Science Experiment

We are researching facts about wool. Last week we were scientists. We did an experiment to see if wool was a good insulator. We put boiling water into 5 jars covered with 5 different coverings. We put a thermometer into each jar. After half an hour we checked the temperatures. We did the experiment 3 times. Twice the wool showed us that it was the best at keeping the water the warmest.
